A video that destroys the lastest US (sorry "UN") propaganda attack on Venezuela
A new "UN report" on Venezuela applies the same dishonest formula as past reports
This video by Venezuelan journalist Karen Méndez Loffredo is a splendid rebuttal of the the latest “UN report” that lies about Venezuela in an effort to help Washington oust President Nicolas Maduro, who was just re-elected on July 28.
As Karen Méndez explains, in 2019, the US and its allies used their clout to stitch together "UN missions" to "investigate" human rights conditions in Venezuela. These missions have regularly churned out reports that shamelessly serve Washington's agenda. This UN mission was assembled by the US in 2019 because it was not satisfied with UN human rights body that was run by Michelle Bachelet, which had set up an office in Venezuela. Bachelet’s statements on Venezuela were actually terrible as I explained while she was the UN “high commissioner” for human rights. She provided inexcusably weak and inadequate dissent against Washington’s attacks on Venezuela, but the US clearly preferred no dissent at all.
Karen Méndez shows that the latest report is as dishonest as previous reports which I responded to 2020 [ Part 1 and Part 2 of my response are on Znet]. The "UN investigators" pretend that victims of US-backed violence don't exist, and also assume that US-backed subversives in Venezuela must have complete impunity. The lastest report is about violence in the wake of Maduro’s re-relection in July. As in previous reports, the UN investigators conveniently raise their standards of evidence in order to dismiss the deaths caused by pro-opposition militants.
A few times over the past several years the UN has commissioned independent investigations (notably by Alfred De Zayas and Alena Douhan) that have bluntly refuted US-lies about Venezuela - and forcefully highlighted the murderous and criminal nature of US sanctions.
So the US and its allies have countered the reports they don't like (even reports by the likes of Bachelet that offered only weak dissent) by having reports repeatedly published that parrot Washington's line. In a way, these “UN reports” attacking Venezuela deserve no response at all. But the Méndez video is concise as well as devastating. It does not dignify the lastest rehash of the attacks on Venezuela with an overly long response.
The obscenity of a UN system that can't stop the ongoing genocide in Gaza for the past year but tries to pin a "crimes against humanity" charge on President Maduro is not missed by Méndez. She drives home that obvious and essential point. These “UN investigators” are indeed serving Nazi Israel’s indispensable ally, the United States, as Israeli crimes in Gaza produce the most cruel and shameful period in human history.
Thanks, Joe, for an excellent and timely response to this latest attempt by US-influenced entities in the UN and elsewhere seek to further the imperialist agenda. While much ink has been spilt on the inconvertible fact that the imperialists have weaponized "human rights" to attack human rights, more needs to be said about that. In particular, these UN bodies have attempted to demonize both Nicaragua and Venezuela using a weaponized gloss of human rights.
Thank you for the post, i was going to have to do a write up refutation for a friend who regrettably was citing that report as legitimate, who is otherwise well versed in imperialism. That video was better than anything I’d be able to do.
Unfortunately the first link to the video is not working, but there is a youtube video of it available.
Thanks again Joe
